Olga Fedorova joined BP Alaska in 2008 right out of college. “I went through their Challenge Program, enjoying multiple roles, mostly in mechanical engineering” said Olga. When Hilcorp acquired BP Alaska, Olga accepted a position and worked for Hilcorp for a little over a year. When her son, Yuri, was born, she wasn’t ready to return to work after four months, which is Hilcorp’s maternity leave policy. “I put in my two week notice and my boss said, if you want to consult and work part time for us, then we would offer you that opportunity” said Olga. “I never wanted to be a consultant engineer, but this opportunity Hilcorp presented me has allowed me to work from home and perform the job I love. It is a benefit to keep my resume current.”
I definitely enjoy the flexibility; that has been great. It was the right thing at the right time.
Working with Hilcorp was awesome as there was a lot of trust and freedom to work on projects – Olga Fedorova
Working with Hilcorp was awesome as there was a lot of trust and freedom to work on projects. It is a very good working environment. There was not a lot of bureaucracy. I like working with other people and I don’t like the uncertainty of working project to project. Next, I will be taking a long term contract position with COP. Again, maternity leaves are involved.
This time, I am taking the place of a woman who is taking maternity leave. It was the right thing at the right time as Yuri starts preschool. COP Alaska is a good company with good long term growth opportunities, so I am excited to start this contract with them and see where it goes.
The balance of family and career is difficult, and I am committed to my career – Olga Fedorova
I am committed to my career and to working. The balance of family and career is difficult, and I also am attracted to COP Alaska because of their generous maternity policy. I have been fortunate to work for great companies, starting with BP Alaska and Hilcorp, and I look forward to the next chapter.
