Major Milestones for the Pikka Project

The Pikka project has officially reached first oil production on Alaska’s North Slope, marking one of the region’s most significant new oil developments in decades. Operated by Santos in partnership with Repsol, Pikka Phase 1 is expected to reach approximately 80,000 barrels of oil per day as production continues to ramp up.

On August 11, Santos announced another major milestone: the successful loading of Pikka’s first crude oil cargo. The inaugural shipment included 450,000 barrels of Alaska North Slope crude, loaded aboard the Polar Resolution at the Valdez Marine Terminal and destined for refineries on the U.S. West Coast. Pikka’s compact, single-pad design and ultra-extended-reach drilling program allow Santos to access resources while minimizing the project’s surface footprint.

The development also incorporates electrified facilities, waste heat recovery, zero routine flaring and methane leak detection technology. These features, together with the project’s collaboration with Nuiqsut residents and Kuukpik Corporation, helped earn Pikka the award. Read more about the recognition here.

Beyond these achievements, Pikka is expected to support approximately 400 full-time jobs, strengthen throughput in the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System and generate substantial long-term economic benefits for Alaska.

Our Members' Perspectives

One of our members, Bruce Dingeman, who is an ARCO alumnus and the current EVP & President Alaska at Santos Ltd shared his thoughts on the milestone after being involved with the Pikka project since 2018.

“The journey from there to first oil has been anything but straightforward.”

Bruce highlighted the years of appraisal work, permitting, infrastructure construction, and large-scale coordination required to move the project from discovery to production. He also emphasized the scale of the effort across Alaska’s North Slope, including more than 120 miles of pipeline and multiple major facilities brought online as part of Phase 1.

“Pikka is more than a project. It’s the foundation for long-term growth.”

His post also recognized the collaboration between Santos Ltd, Repsol, local stakeholders, and the Alaska workforce that helped make first oil possible. Read his full post here.
